Nairobi, Kenya, November 4, 2019//- Kenya has this year intercepted 21 luxury cars stolen in the United Kingdom (UK).

An international criminal syndicate is believed to be behind the smuggling of the stolen vehicles.

The cars seized at the port of Mombasa were intended to transit through Kenya and arrive at other destinations in East Africa.

Kenya’s Revenue Authority (KRA) stated the vehicles seized in
collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and UK’s National Crime Agency had been shipped at ports in the UK and Belgium.

Following the seizures, Kenyan and British authorities have worked together to ensure the stolen vehicles are returned to the country of origin.

Four vehicles were shipped back to the UK last Friday.

They comprise the Range Rover Vogue Autobiography (two), Range Rover Sport and Mercedes Benz GLE 250D AMG.

A Range Rover Sport and a BMW X5 were shipped back in June.

The seizure of the vehicles follows the launch, in 2018, of a campaign to fight illicit trade in Kenya.

“We cannot afford to provide safe passage for stolen motor vehicles into the East African market,” said a spokesperson of the KRA.

Police in the UK are expected to hand over the vehicles to their owners.
