INEC Builds the Capacity of Journalists to Approach the Presidential Election

Lomé, Togo, November 29, 2019- The planned presidential election in a few months in different staffs, we are actively preparing for this important event for the country, a success.

This is the case of media professionals who were training workshop, Wednesday, November 27, 2019 in Lomé. The meeting was organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in collaboration with the High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC).

Placed under the theme: “The role and responsibility of the media before, during and after the 2020 presidential election”, the session allowed leaders of the CENI (institution responsible for organizing and supervising the elections in Togo) to equip men and women of public and private media, on “issues and challenges” of the poll ahead and call them at the same time, the professionalism in the exercise of their profession to a successful election and peaceful.”

“This is for the INEC to strengthen partner media capabilities that together we can drive the process to completion, real-time information our citizens on evolution, so that we come to a peaceful process in 2020” , said in his opening speech, the Vice President of the CENI, Jean-Claude HOMAWOO.

The media, he said, have “heavy responsibility for a mission of information and education to preserve a climate of peace during elections” in Togo. “You are called in these sensitive periods to give the information with clarity, truth and responsibility”, launched the representative of the President of the INEC in the media area.

The HAAC, through the voice of its Vice President, Octave OLYMPIO called on media professionals in ethical and ethics of their profession in order to contribute to the good organization of the elections.

Recall that on November 12, the HAAC signed a charter of good conduct with the Togolese media. This is for the HAAC to ensure that the information actors avoid the dissemination and publication of information that can lead to violence, in order to preserve peace and respect for human rights before during and after the 2020 presidential election.
