Harsh Economic Conditions: Head Potters Join ‘Kumi Yen Preko’ Demo in Ghana

Head potters on the demonstration

Accra, Ghana, July 9, 2019//-Hundreds of head potters in Accra today joined ‘Kumi Yen Preko’ demonstration to express displeasure over harsh economic conditions in the West African country.

According to our correspondents covering the event in Ghana’s capital, the head potters who carried basins, lamented that the juicy promises made to them by the Akufo-Addo-led government were yet to materialized.

The government has been in power for almost three years but our economic conditions have deteriorated despite the promises, they said.

In a earlier statement, the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who is an Executive Member of the Coalition of Social Justice (CSJ) said the demonstration was against ‘Hardship and Oppression’ in Ghana under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

He added that today’s demonstration underway in some principal streets of Accra is a replication of the President’s own demonstration he led in 1995 in Ghana which led to several brutalities in the country.

“Nana Addo instituted ‘Kum yen Preko’ and we are going to protest the same way under the same oppression and hardships under which he led protesters in 1995 when former President Rawlings wanted to implement the Value Added Tax in Ghana,” he told journalists ahead of the demonstration.

Mr Gyamfi was quick to add that the demonstration was also inspired by the “unfulfilled” promises of President Akufo-Addo which led to his victory.

“We had so much hope in the Akufo-Addo administration to transform Ghana after they made all those campaign promises in 2016 but it seems all these promises have become 419,” he added.
