Ghana to Cough Up Whopping $1. 22 Billion for National ID Cards

Accra, Ghana, May 23, 2018//-Prof. Ken Attafuah, the Executive Director of National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that the Ghana Card issuance project which is spearheaded by his outfit would  cost the country $1.22 billion in the next 15 years.

  “Over the next 15 years this project is going to cost us as a nation $1.22 billion”, told TV3, an Accra-based TV station this evening.

He explained that the project which is set to begin on May 28 from the Jubilee House in Accra is hinged on a “design-build-operate-transfer” agreement which will see both government and the private partner make some financial commitments.

“The private partners share of this burden is $678 million, the government of Ghana component $531 million,” Prof Attafuah added.

He could not disclose how much the government has so far spent on for the project. But stated that the NIA has sufficient money to begin the process very soon.

Officials of the authority said the nationwide registration exercise would be conducted from one region to the other. While Ghanaians in the diaspora would also be registered later.

The Ghana Card project which seeks to modedrnise and formalize the Ghanaian economy, is one of the campaign promises of the governing New Patriotic Party.
