Ghana: Struggling NHIA Sponsors Adwoa Safo’s Trip Abroad?

Deputy Majority Leader (3rd right) wanted sponsorship for a trip on women’s empowerment

Accra, Ghana, July 19, 2018//-Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency Sarah Adwoa Safo, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader, wrote to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in March for sponsorship on a training at Havard Kennedy School in the US.

She was supposed to attend the training as chairperson of the women’s caucus of Parliament.

“As the chairperson of the Women Caucus in Parliament, this program would enlighten and enhance my knowledge in leadership and governance,” Ms Safo, who is also the Minister of State in charge of Procurement, stated in a letter intercepted by 3news.com.

She requested $8,500 for tuition as well as funds to cover her tickets and accommodation.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has already expressed disgust at the move.

The Executive Programme on Women and Leadership at Havard Kennedy School was scheduled to have taken place from Sunday, April 29 to Friday, May 4.

This comes in the wake of demands by the NHIA for increases in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levies.

Though the Authority has assured that the NHIS will not collapse under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the current funding module is said to be militating against the sustainability of the Scheme.

A memo that made rounds on social media revealed the Authority spending a whopping GH¢62,370 on 65 persons said to be government communicators.

Already, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Dr Samuel Annor, has said that allocation is part of the new policy drive of his firm.
