Ghana: Presec Produces Another Winner of UBA Foundation National Essay Competition

January 28, 2019//-Ghana’s Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (SHS) located at Legon in Accra has produced another winner of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Foundation National Essay Competition.

A 17-year-old student of the school, Arrif Abudul Sabit today emerged as overall winner of the fifth edition of the competition. The fourth edition was also won by another student of Presec, Jason Emmanuel K. Asante Ghansah who is currently studying in one of the universities in Ghana, courtesy the UBA scholarship.

Mr Sabit received an amount of $5,000.00 and a trophy as wining prize. He was followed closely by Manasseh Sampana Nam-Mahime, a student of St Aquinas SHS in Accra as first runner-up, while Nana Adwoa Quayson of the Aburi SHS picked the second runner-up prize. They received $3500 and $2000 respectively.

The cash prize serves as an educational grant for the winners to study in any African university of their choice.
While each of the 10 finalists was given a UBA branded laptop and a certificate to encourage them and others to participate anytime there is such an opportunity.

The fifth Ghana edition brought together 10 finalists from different schools across Ghana and was met with intense competition and bragging rights at the head office of UBA Ghana from among the 10 finalists who fiercely vied for the ultimate.

Speaking at the grand finale of the competition, UBA Ghana MD/CEO, Mr Isong Udom congratulated all 10 finalists especially the three winners, and encouraged them to invest their time and energy on their education.

“It is one of our most cherish initiatives as a bank. We have invested $150,000 into the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition for the past four years”, he revealed.

A Deputy Minister of Education, Mrs Barbara Ayisi Acher who was the special guest of honour, applauded the UBA’s effort at sustaining the scholarship programme for the past five years.

She urged other companies operating in Ghana to emulate the shining example of the UBA.

Dr Angel Tina Mensah of the Ghana Education Service (GES) noted: “The topic for the essay competition- Law enforcement a responsibility for all”, is very important at this time. This is because lawlessness is spreading across, she stressed.

The UBA Foundation National Essay Competition which was launched in 2014 in Ghana, has provided a competitive platform to develop the intellectual and writing abilities of SHS students in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal as well as granting winners fully paid scholarship into any University in Africa.

The competition in Ghana has so far produced 12 winners currently studying in various universities, while the latest three winners are waiting to go universities this year.
