Ghana: Energy Commission Launches Its Flagship ECOFRIDGES GO Initiative

Accra, Ghana, October 31, 2020//-The Energy Commission has launched its flagship ECOFRIDGES GO initiative on electrical appliances for the public in the usage of energy efficient and environment friendly cooling gadgets for household and offices.

The move is aimed at bringing to the fore $25 million in financing and support the purchase of 50,000 energy efficient cooling appliances in partnership with some selected banks and vendors in the country.

Participation of selected vendors and banks at the launch were Nesstra Ghana Limited Letshego, Hisense Ghana Limited, Electroland Ghana Limited, SMI, Ederick Limited, Ecobank Ghana Limited and Calbank PLC.

The initiative Christened, “ECOWAS Refrigerators and Airconditions (ECOFRIDGES GO) project is geared towards cooling of appliances of saving energy as well as cost in paying bills.

The ECOFRIDGES GO initiative is held under the auspices of the Energy Commission in partnership with some selected banks and vendors to serve as linkages between the sellers (showrooms) and organisations, households and forms part of the effort to promote energy efficient appliances.

In his address at the launch, the Marketing and Communications Manager of Nesstra Ghana Limited, dealers in carrier air-conditions, Nana Yaw Ampem-Darko Antwi, commended the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Energy for their drive to roll out the ECOFRIDGES GO initiative saying the project seeks to protect and secure appliances that are environmentally friendly such as refrigerators and air conditioners for households and offices.

According to him, Nesstra Ghana Ltd have provided cutting edge appliances that suits the specifications of international agencies including the Ministry of Energy and Energy Commission adding that the carrier units of the appliances have the lowest consumption of electricity.

“The company have twenty-five showrooms across the country and our target is to reach all towns and cities and however urged the public to visit their sales point in the various malls and shops to get their environmentally friendly air conditioners”, he said.

The Minister of Energy,  John Peter Amewu in a speech read on his behalf at the launch said household and organisations will save adequate income by replacing old refrigerators and air conditioners with energy efficient appliances.

According to him, the appliances will reduce the consumption rate of electricity and explained that close to 465 Gwh will lead to energy saving in the next 10 years since 10 refrigerators have been replaced across the country under the initiative and have brought to the fore saving of 400 Gwh.

The Executive Secretary of Energy Commission Ing. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer said ECOFRIDGES GO initiative will take the old appliances out of the system and will be replaced with energy savings appliances adding that it will bring energy security which will lead to saving energy cost of households and organisations in the coming years.

In a remark, the Director, Renewable Energy of the Energy Commission, Kofi Agyarko called on the public to refrain from the purchase of used appliances and pointed out that it increases energy consumption and impact negatively on the environment.
