January 22, 2019//-Australians planning to retire have another 11 months up their sleeve to make preparations as December has been nominated as the best month to hang up your hat – but it’s not all about money, according to the experts.

December marks the halfway point of the financial year, and allows would-be retirees to earn the most amount of income for the least amount of tax, compared to a full year’s earnings. While financial tips and tricks are essential for a comfortable retirement, there are other ways to prepare for future happiness.

Founder and editor of Retirement Life magazine, Georgina Senes said money is usually the primary stress for people leaving the workforce, and fear of loneliness or boredom is next in line.

“Having your financial ducks in a row is an important part of retiring, but there’s more to a successful retirement than good money management.

To enjoy retirement, boosting health, nurturing relationships, finding a purpose and maintaining social networks should be included in the planning in order to achieve a balanced lifestyle and a more happy retirement,” Georgina said.

The good news is according to the Australian Loneliness Report conducted by the Australian Psychological Society and Swinburne University, Australians over 65 are ‘less lonely, less socially anxious, and less depressed’.

There are many support systems and social networks in place that have contributed to this positive statistic.

Founder of MyLifeChange, Paul McKeon has penned several books analysing the lifestyle issues encountered by people of retirement age.

“We’ve been taught that retirement is all about saving and investing it well…but if your relationships are toxic and your health is cooked, you’re not going to have much fun with your million dollars,” Mr McKeon says.
