DCN-GH: Refusal to Publish Emile Short Report Betrays Gov’t’s Commitment to Transparency

Emile Short presenting Ayawaso commission report to Akufo-Addo

Accra, Ghana, April 17, 2019//-Democratic Credentials Network Ghana (DCN-GH), a leading pressure group has added its voice to the call on the Akufo-Addo-led government to as a matter of urgency make public the findings of the Emile Short Commission Report on the Ayawaso West Wuogon shootings.

According to the group, the refusal to publish the report betrays the government’s Commitment to transparent and accountable governance which it promised the people whilst in opposition.

Dr. Victor Abdul-Satarh Quarshie Adonoo, Executive Director of DCN-GH said in a statement: “Our disappointment is government’s entrenched position not to make the findings of the Commission public. To us, this is a blatant disregard for the long standing principles of transparent and accountable governance promised and it betrays the president’s commitment to uphold same”.

As a listening government, we are by this statement appealing to the President of the Republic  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take action for the immediate publication of the said report.

We are of the firm conviction that the Ayawaso West Wuogon security hitches are a matter of great national and international importance, and that the people of Ghana deserve to know the findings so that they can fully monitor the implementation of the recommendations therein”.

Of much concern is the recent Ayawaso West Wuogon shootings by masked security operatives believed to be deployed by Bryan Acheampong, Minister of State in charge of National Security.

Why Bryan Acheampong still at post

Dr Adonoo and his group therefore questioned why Mr Acheampong and other NPP members linked to the shooting incident still at post.

“ One would have  expected the president to by now sack at least, his Minister of state in charge of National Security; and also causing the arrest of criminals the Minister boldly admitted of deploying to unleash violence on innocent citizens but alas.

Looking under the covers of the NPP government, we see a more complex and troubling reality in maintaining peace and order and the earlier we rise to the occasion to address the situation, the better for all of us.

This is seriously creating doubt in the minds of Ghanaians if the president is really in charge of the relatively peaceful Ghana he inherited”.

“Fast forward, DCN-GH will like to draw government’s attention to very profound and touching statements made in the 2016 Manifesto of the party which seemed to have done the magic for the NPP”.

Truth be told! The abuse of power, brazen acts of violence, impunity and dreaded vigilantism witnessed under the NPP government in just two years do not only pose serious threat to our democratic credentials but derails progress made in our democratic journey as a country, he added.

Dr Adonoo noted: “Whiles at it in Ghana, the picture looks so dark out there in the international community thereby casting a slur on our democratic integrity.  More importantly, the President Akufo-Addo has not done much so far as state security is concerned. He seems to have lost focus and is not acting decisively to protect the citizenry”.
