September 21, 2020//-In an exclusive interview with Finbold.com, Rachel Welch, Chief Operating Officer of Atlas VPN, has elaborated on facts that contributed to TikTok’s potential ban in the U.S.
Role of China’s history of cybersecurity threats in TikTok issue
During the interview, Welch reiterated that there is no solid evidence linking the company to stealing user data. However, as a Chinese company, U.S lawmakers had to raise an alarm. According to Welch:
“The fact of the matter is that the TikTok ban controversy did not arise from a single security issue related to China, but from a history of cyber incidents involving Chinese state-sponsored attacks.”
Based on historical cybersecurity threat incidents, Congress has declared China “the single greatest risk to the security of American technologies”.
The COO noted that a probe into TikTok began after it emerged that administrators were allegedly directed to censor videos deemed sensitive to the Chinese government.
She highlighted over the years, U.S citizens and the entire country needs to be on the lookout for cyber threats from China. Welch added that China has been executing cyber attacks to steal sensitive military information.
Welch pointed out that Chinese cybersecurity threats are unique because they are well-thought-over with strategic objectives. She added that the threats have not evolved to the level of causing an armed conflict.
