Accra, Ghana, November 30, 2019//-Asanko Gold Ghana Limited (AGGL), a jointly-owned by Asanko and Gold Fields, has been adjudged the mining company of the year 2019 for two consecutive times at the fifth edition of the Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA).
Asanko Gold Ghana, a leading gold mine company operating in the country outshone key competitions to pick the top award on last Friday, 29 November, 2019. It first won the same award in 2018.
Additionally, the mining company won two awards namely Best Performer in Exploration and 1st runner-up in Innovation categories in the night.
Speeches at the night
Speaking at the awards night which climaxed 91th Anniversary celebrations of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Sulemanu Koney said the mining industry continues to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
The fiscal revenue, forex receipts and Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) are still unmatched by any other economic sector in the country, according to Mr Koney.
The special guest of honour of the night, the Minister of Business Development, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, appealed to the players in the mining industry to set up a GHC50 million Entrepreneurship Fund to help reduce unemployment in the country.
In a speech read for the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, assured the mining executives that the government was committed to continue creating the requisite enabling environment for mining companies to thrive and grow their business.
He added: “ The government is also not relenting on its agenda to use mining as a catalyst for the industrial transformation of the country with key policies focused on resourced-based industrialization, value addition, local content, linkages developments, and also mining community development schemes in collaboration with the Minerals Development Fund, among others”..
The awards which was organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines sought to promote, encourage, and celebrate outstanding achievements and excellence in the mining industry.
