World Bank Group Senior Vice President and General Counsel in Ghana for 4-day Working Visit

Accra, March 18, 2018//-World Bank Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Ms Sandie Okoro arrived in Ghana on Sunday, March 18, 2018 for a four-day mission to Ghana, after which she will visit Liberia as part of a 6-day regional visit.

Sandie Okoro’s mission will enable her to understand how World Bank financed programmes and projects are working on the ground.

The mission will also afford her the opportunity to learn how the Bank’s recently decentralized legal services is working and how they can better support the Government’s programme.

Ms Okoro will be accompanied by Chief Counsel, of the World Bank’s Africa Region, Sheila Braka Musiime.

In Ghana, she will pay courtesy calls on Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akuffo and Her Ladyship Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to discuss Agile strategies the Bank and Government could employ in Ghana and learn about the justice sector’s accomplishments and challenges.

Ms Okoro will participate in roundtable discussions on The Political Economy Landscape-Ghana@61: Reflections on Democracy and Development and Gender Based Violence and Law Reforms.

Sandra Okoro will also visit the Climate Innovation Center at Ashesi University, to interact with beneficiaries of the project and discuss the dividends they have reaped from the Project.

Profiles

Sandra Ngozi Okoro,  Hopkins World Bank Group Senior President and General Counsel Sandie, a British national, is a highly regarded thought leader with a strong track record of developing new legal approaches in the field of international finance.

She currently serves as the principal adviser and spokesperson on all legal mattersfor the World Bank Group.

She is the legal advisor to the Board, management, the Inspection Panel, and the CEO of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Program.

Prior to joining the Bank, she served as the Deputy General Counsel of HSBC Retailing Banking and Wealth Management, and a member of the Executive Management Committee of HSBC Global Asset Management.

She had been appointed to the Management Board and Panel of Experts of The Hague-based Panel of Recognized International Market Experts in Finance, which assists with the settlement of international disputes of complex financial transactions.

She played a leadership role during the financial crisis particularly in respect to the mitigation of counterparty risk exposure.

She has been recognized for her work and volunteer efforts, most recently in July 2016 when she was named as one of the 100 Women to Watch by the Female FTSE Board.

Sheila Braka Musiime, Chief Counsel for Africa Region. Sheila, a Ugandan national, has extensive experience working on law and development issues in several countries around the world.

She is currently the World Bank Chief Counsel for the Africa Region responsible for overseeing the legal aspects of the Bank’s operations in Africa.

Prior to her current role, Sheila worked as the Chief Counsel for the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) Region of the World Bank and as a Counsel and Senior Counsel on the World Bank’s lending operations in South Asia, Africa, EAP and Europe and Central Asia.

She also worked on policy issues for the World Bank including general policies for investment lending, fraud and corruption matters, sovereign guarantees and access to information.

Sheila has dealt with Heavily indebted poor countries (HIPC), Low income, Upper middle income, Middle income, Small states, Sub-Saharan Africa (developing only), as well as High income countries.

Prior to joining the Bank, Sheila worked in private practice in Uganda.

She obtained her LL.M at the Harvard University and LL.B at the University of Makerere, Uganda.
