NMC Chairman Breaks Silence on TV Licence Brouhaha, Justifies Payment

Chairman of NMC, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng

Accra, January 7, 2018//-The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng this evening broke his silence on the payment of TV licence which generated public outcry in the country.

“How can the payment of TV licence make the government unpopular? It is all propaganda. It is time for us to speak the truth in this country”, he said this at Ghana Writers Association’s  event to celebrate the 70th birthday of  Professor Kofi Anyidoho, a renowned poet and a scholar.

The recent setting up of special courts by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, upon the by the Director-General (D-G) of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to prosecute TV Defaulters did not go well with Ghanaians.

But Nana Gyan-Apenteng justified that the payment of the TV licence would ensure that the state broadcaster promote the Ghanaian culture and cease the showing of foreign programs on its channels.

He continued: “We should be seeing more culture programs on the radio and TV channels” rather than the showing of foreign programs.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng who is also the President of the Ghana Writers Association (GAW) explained : “Public service broadcasting means we the citizens should pay for broadcasting”.

Meanwhile, the association has named the GAW Special Awards which will be held in November this year after Professor Kofi Anyidoho for his unparalleled contribution to the association as well the literate arts industry.
