Benue State University

February 16, 2018//-The management of the Benue State University (BSU) has closed the university indefinitely citing insecurity on campus as reason for the closure.

The situation has forced the school authorities to suspend all ongoing examinations.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, Catherine Bur, the university authorities were compelled to close the school because it gathered that miscreants had infiltrated campus hostels in the institution with the aim of fomenting trouble.

The school authorities therefore advised student to vacate the campus before 6pm on Friday.

The statement read: “The management of Benue State University on behalf of the Senate has reviewed the security situation on campus and hereby directs the immediate closure of the University.

“It has come to the knowledge of management that some miscreants have infiltrated the hostel thereby causing disaffection among students and truncating the ongoing second semester examination.

“As a result of the situation, all examinations are hereby directed to vacate the hostel latest 6pm today (yesterday) Friday, 16th February, 2018

“Management empathizes with law abiding students who have to suffer this inconvenience. Students are therefore urged to remain calm as the university management is doing everything possible to invite them to come and complete the examinations when normalcy returns to campus.”

However, very early on Friday, students were stopped from gaining access into the campus as all gates were under lock and key.

The students had turned down efforts to be addressed by university authorities, insisting they would only listen to State Governor Samuel Ortom.

But following tips that miscreants had infiltrated the campus, the security of the institution arrested an ex-soldier in one of the hostels.

Also picked up were some of the students harbouring the soldier.

However, as at press time in Friday INDEPENDENT could not ascertain the number of students that were picked alongside the soldier.
