Addis Ababa, Ethiopia// — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the use of violence and any attempt to seize power by force in Nigeria.
He called on all actors to exercise restraint and to safeguard the security of the population and the stability of the country.
Mr Youssouf expressed this concern following the serious events that occurred in Niamey during the night of 28 to 29 August 2026.
The night was marked by armed clashes and attacks against several sensitive sites in the capital, resulting in casualties and significant material damage.
The Chairperson of the Commission also used this statement to extend his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured during these events.
He reaffirmd the African Union’s commitment to standing with the people of Niger in support of peace, stability and national cohesion.
Mr Youssouf further reiterated the African Union’s readiness to support efforts towards the restoration of constitutional order, in accordance with the relevant instruments of the African Union.
The Chairperson of the Commission would continue to closely monitor developments in Niger and reaffirm the African Union’s readiness to contribute to efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in Niger and across the Sahel region.
