THE ILEGAL, A SUMMARY
(A Law Book by Nana Oppong)
The law is everywhere. It is pervasive and inescapable. Indeed, it would be fair to describe the law as the oxygen of social order and of all human relationships. Increasingly, as we conduct our affairs globally and enter into more and more international relationships, our relationships and transactions become more and more “legalistic”. Law is necessary as a means of ordering businesses and other affairs in a predictable manner. As well, law is important for ensuring peace, fairness and justice for all.

The truth is that whether we like it or not, every person is subject to natural, national, international, customary and even sacred laws. The best societies are those subject to the rule of law and where the greater majority are literate in the law.

It is therefore, surprising that not much effort has been made in our schools and communities to ensure adequate legal literacy amongst the citizenry. Most people are ignorant about the ways lawyers and judges think and justify their actions. A lot of legal culture is shrouded in mysteries. It shouldn’t be that way.

“Everyone should be a lawyer, to some degree”. This is critical. How can the citizenry be subject to a countless number of laws, judgements, orders, jurisprudence and expectations, when we are not being schooled in them?
The answer to the foregoing points to a failure to appreciate the ever-evolving complexity of legal culture.

In a competitive world dominated more and more by exploitative international business interactions with strangers and persons whose dominant ethics might be “self-interest first”, the best protection of individual choices and freedoms is not the police; not lawyers nor even the courts, but sufficient knowledge about laws and about how to think, plan and act like a good lawyer.

Since modern religions, morality, humanism and constitutional democracies outlawed robbery or the dispossession of persons through violence, our world has gradually come to accept the redistribution of wealth and all sorts of dispossessions of persons and exploitations of man by man as justified, as long as these are undertaken systematically, legally or in a manner approved by law.

Endless are the ways in which those learned in the law can strategically and legally take advantage of and even exploit those ignorant of the approved methods, institutions and preferences of the law.
The Ilegal is a book whose main objective is to provide non-lawyers with the ‘thinking’, the culture, the principles, the narratives and the mindset that “create” the good lawyer and the great judge.

The aim of the book is to equip the reader with all the wisdom that he or she would need in order to correctly understand lawyering and judging so as to be learned and to able to arrange all affairs legally, strategically and profitably.
The author of the Ilegal Nana Oppong, is a brilliant mind. He is the President of the Distinguished Scholars of Africa (DistinSA) and of the International Standards Journalists Association (ISJA).

He is an internationally renowned expert on intelligence and author of groundbreaking works in science, economics, education and so on. Nana Oppong is a Canadian-trained Ghanaian lawyer with decades of international scholarship and legal experiences. The book is a synthesis of the best of the western, eastern, African and world legal traditions summarized in three laws as follows. The first law is this. You have the right to be wise. Here is the second law. You have the right to be foolish. The third law is this. The wise have the right to exploit the foolish.

The wise have the right to exploit the foolish as long as they so without violence and in accordance with laid down principles of law.
As in all things legal, you have a choice as to which person you want to be and whether you want to be foolish or wise. Should you decide to be wise however, the Ilegal is your book. In it you’ll find everything you need to be smart. It is simply a brilliant book for those who want to be wise, according to law.
The Ilegal is not only a book for business-minded persons, it is highly recommended for the young as well as the old. For in the Ilegal are understandable narratives of intelligence that are universally true and very useful for everyday living.
