J Initiative Takes Safer Internet Education to Accra Schools

Accra, Ghana, February 2, 2018//-J Initiative, a leading child centred NGO with the support of its partners has taken the celebration of the Safer Internet Day 2018 (SID2018) to the door steps of  students of  La-Dadekotopon constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

About 2,500 students in some selected schools in the constituency benefited from a day’s education programme on safer internet practices and other related issues on ICT, ahead of the SID2018 which takes on Tuesday, next week.

A Deputy Minister of Communications, Vincent Sowah Odotei who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) of the constituency advised the students to spend less time on the internet.

He urged them to put the safer internet knowledge they gained from the event into good use to enable them stay safer on the internet.

Mr Odotei noted that achieving a better internet as the theme for this year  SID states ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better Internet Starts with You’ resonates well with the step taken by the government to ensure that internet users especially children are well protected on the net.

“It is everybody’s responsibility to ensure that the right content is created, people connect with others appropriately and people are mindful of what they share about themselves and other people on the Internet”, he added.

“It is only by such careful steps that the internet could be a better place for ALL”, Mr Odotei stressed.

The day’s event was partnered by officials of the Department of Children. At the end of the event, a dossier in the form of signatures were collected and presented on behalf of the school children and young people of Ghana to the MP to be passed on to Parliament.

The dossier titled ‘Our Protection’ is demanding the protection of children and young people on internet and off the internet.

This year’s SID celebration is themed- ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better Internet Starts with you’ is spearheaded by the J Initiative and supported by the Ministry of Communications and other partners.

“Events are taking place in all the ten regions and we encourage opinion leaders, policy makers, teachers, parents, children etc take part in the discussions in the regions”,   the Executive Director of J Initiative, Mrs Awo Aidam Amenyah said.

Safer Internet Day celebration in Ghana is expected to contribute to awareness creation and practice of responsible use of technology.
