Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged his colleagues Heads of State of ECOWAS to assent to the implementation of the new roadmap for the ECOWAS single currency.

Speaking at the 5th meeting of the Presidential Taskforce on the single currency in Accra Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo noted assenting to the roadmap for implementation of the currency to be known as the Eco, is key to facilitating inter regional trade.

“I entreat all members of the presidential taskforce and the ECOWAS Authority and heads of states to give presidential assent to the new roadmap that will be adopted at our meetings,” he appealed.

The meeting, which was hosted by President Akufo-Addo, is the 5th of such meetings to fast track the process of a single currency for West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ).

In his opening remarks, President Akufo-Addo said the members of the taskforce should hasten in efforts to assent to the implementation of the new roadmap to achieve the common currency target by 2020.

The president also added that all countries should introduce measures that will help in attaining the four main criteria for the convergence.

“I call on governments of our member states to ensure all measures so that all components of the micro economic convergence criteria and prerequisite of the convergence are met.”

It is expected that the common currency will among other things facilitate intra regional trade.

The meeting was attended bythe President of Cote d’Ivoire, Allassane Ouattara; President of Niger, Issoufou Mafiamadou, President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and   Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele  among others.
